Samuel Nketia Boateng is a Teaching and Research Laboratory Technologist at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Sustainable Engineering, University of Cape Coast. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Technology and his Master’s in Environmental Science from the University of Cape Coast. Since 2018, Samuel has been working in the Water and Environmental Quality (WEQ) Laboratory, a facility funded under the NUFFIC/NICHE project. He has demonstrated the ability to manage laboratories under strict safety standards and has leveraged modern equipment for advanced environmental analysis. He has also served on various committees discussing Lab issues and also served as a Laboratory and Field Trainer for an NSF-USA founded project under the NSF-IRES to understand the Nexus between Seawater intrusion into groundwater and Sanitation.  Since 2024, Samuel has worked with close 20 International students from the US. This project will run through to 2026. Again, over the years, he has trained nearly 40 interns and National Service personnel in water and environmental quality analysis. Currently, he supervises the day-to-day administration of the WEQ  Lab while also supporting teaching and research. Samuel has co-authored multiple academic papers, providing extensive technical expertise that contributed to the success and completion of significant research findings. He has presented papers at major conferences in Ghana and  participated in outreach activities aimed at educating

communities on water related issues.  His research interests mainly focus on waste-to-energy, wastewater treatment, groundwater and river water quality monitoring, desalination technologies, nutrient remediation, WASH, identification and remediation of emerging environmental contaminants (PFAs, DBPs, pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, etc.), and wetland management. He has published in reputable peer-reviewed journals such as Springer Journal of Wetlands, Egyptian Academic Journal of Biological Sciences (Acad. J. Biolog. Sci.), and Open Access Library Journal

Our Team

This research Team consist of Professors, Laboratory Technologist, Postgraduate and Undergraduate students from the University of Cape Coast (UCC). The Professors serve as supervisors, offer mentorship and guidance in research, laboratory experimentation, publications and grant writing skills. Some of the Laboratory Technologist Include Gertrude Oboh, while Postgraduate masters students include; Felicia Takyi, Harriet Kyerewaah Ampoful, Prince Kwesi Yeboah-Danso and Stephen Kwaw Awuah While Undergraduate Students include Samuel Duku, Alima and Davis Asiatewen Kwame Agilim from the  University of Cape Coast.

Research Interests

RESEARCH INTEREST

  1. Emerging environmental contaminants (PFAs, DBPs, Pharmaceuticals, Endocrine disruptors etc).

  2. Water and wastewater treatment using natural products and remediation of Anti-biotic resistant bacteria from treated wastewater.

  3. Modelling of groundwater and river water quality.

  4. Desalination technologies, nutrient remediation.

  5. Nexus between solid waste and energy.

  • By combining laboratory-based experimentation with fieldwork, I aim to develop scalable and sustainable solutions for environmental pollution control, water resource management, and renewable energy production. My extensive experience managing environmental quality laboratories, supervising research projects, and collaborating on international initiatives (e.g., groundwater intrusion and seawater intrusion studies) has prepared me to contribute meaningfully to interdisciplinary research. I am expert with the use of instruments like AAS, HPLC, UV-VIS, and GC-MS for environmental analysis and statistical software like Originpro, SPSS, STATA as well as VOS Viewer, publish or perish, and Bibiloshiny, for bibliometric analysis for visualising environmental data. I am at using my research to the educate, solve existing problems and contribute to the development of  Sub Saharan communities.
